Brax Church

This church is dedicated to Saint Orens who was the Bishop of Auch in the fifth century.

Three churches were successively built on this site all of which were linked to the presence of Brax Castle:

• In the 15th century: a first wooden church was built.

• In the 16th century: a stone and brick church with a bell gable was built and consecrated on 4th August 1511, by the Bishop of Pamiers. On this occasion, Jean de Montfort who was Lord of Brax and a Toulouse magistrate, donated a bell.

• In the mid-19th century, the bell gable was at risk of collapsing and needed to be replaced. However, funds were lacking. Thanks to the initiative of the parish priest, Roger de Saint Félix (1845 to 1877),  the necessary funds were raised to rebuild it.

• The  present day bell tower-porch was inaugurated in 1851 and incorporates the main entrance. Two statues adorn each side of the entrance.

• A few years later, the church was enlarged and acquired its current Neo-Gothic appearance.

• Church Interior:

- The coat of arms of the noble Montfort family is located under the porch over the interior entrance door.

- In the church choir stalls behind the high altar, lies Marie de St Félix beneath a slab inscribed: “Here lies a woman of great merit and exemplary virtue, Dame Marie de St Félix Varennes, born Roques Montgaillard, mother of the parish priest of Brax, established by royal decree, born 26th September 1777, died in Brax 15th January 1847.”

- A painted wooden statue of St. Orens is preserved in the display case of the Chapel of the Virgin.

- The naïve and romantic paintings on the vault and walls date from the late 19th century.

- In the chapel dedicated to Sainte Germaine is a painting by local painter Mr. Depuntis (1833-1901) further to the saint's canonization in 1867.
